Moving with your dog

dog, move, moving boxes

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, it can be a stressful process. All the planning and preparation is time consuming and tiring!

Even though dogs do not understand the concept of moving, they can sense that something is up.

Luckily, there are a few ways we can help our furry friends go through the moving process a little easier.

Keep your dog’s regularly scheduled activities

Even though you will likely have less time for your dog than usual, she is a creature of habit so keeping up with her daily walks and feeding times will help keep her feeling happy and secure. And a nice walk will be good for you too!

Involve your dog in the packing process

While your pooch won’t really help you pack, she can keep you company. Play some upbeat music to liven the mood. Let her smell the boxes and the items being packed. Tell her all about her new house and neighborhood. While she won’t understand what you are saying, she will understand your tone. If you are feeling good, so will she.

What you can do on moving day

On the big day take the time to walk and feed your dog as usual. It is a good idea to have a friend or family member doggy sit while you go from one home to another. When it is time to introduce your pooch to her new surroundings, take her for a walk around the neighborhood before going inside. Make sure her bed is already set up and waiting for her. Take her in each room and have her dinner waiting for her. All the familiar smells will help her feel at home.

Long distance moves

If you are moving out of the city or country, you will need to do additional preparation. Ensure your dog has had a recent checkup at the vet. You want your dog to be up to date on her shots and in tip top shape to travel. If she is on any medication, make sure you are given enough to last until you find a new vet in your new location.

Flying

If your dog does not wear an ID tag, have one made. Make sure you plan far ahead and know all the information you need to know to get your pooch safely on the plane and to your destination.

Driving

If your dog does not wear an ID tag, have one made. When you get to a new area, google where the nearest veterinary office is in case of emergency. And travel with a pet first aid kit.

My dog's big move

The summer of 2021 my two girls experienced an epic move from one province to another. They lived in our travel trailer from June 1st to November 11th. We travelled all around our new province, camped in 26 provincial parks, hiked on numerous trails, explored beaches and new areas, and drove for hours and hours. Through it all we kept their walking and feeding times as consistent as possible.

And as one of girls is epileptic, we made arrangements with our vet to have enough medication to last the whole time we’d be on the road.

They are now settled in their new home with 10 acres of woods to explore.

Happy moving!

Do you have an anxious dog? It is heartbreaking to see your beloved pet in distress. You want to help but often feel helpless.

While you cannot always be certain of the cause, at some point in you dog’s life, he or she may have had a negative experience that now causes them anxiety in certain situations. The most common being when around strangers, left alone or startled by loud noises or sudden movements. Your dog can exhibit signs of anxiety by trembling, drooling, cowering in fear, barking, chewing or hiding.

Luckily there are wonderful resources you can use to help your dog become confident and happy again. One such resource is called Anxious Canine. Brave Puppy

Is your dog afraid of thunder or fireworks? You aren’t alone.

Dogs have different personalities, quirks and fears. My two huskies look alike but they have quite different reactions to loud sounds. One has no issues at all while the other is always terrified.

Well have no more fear, there’s an app for that!

The Brave Puppy app was inspired by Kasi & Luna, two Labradors who both had their own unique issues with different sounds. The app is a training tool that will help condition your dog to all kinds of sounds by using recordings that you play. You start on a low volume and work your way up based on your pup's reaction. By doing this in a controlled environment you allow your pup to get used to a sound on his own time and reward him along the way.

There are currently several service dog organisations using the Brave Puppy app free of charge to help expose future guide and support dogs to sounds. It features over 85 sounds ranging from children playing and doorbells to church bells and saws. What a great idea.

Other notable features include:

  •  Curated Sounds
  •  Favorites list
  •  Supports Charity
  •  Bluetooth access
  •  Family Library
  •  Responsive Developer

Download the Lite version for free and try before you buy. I sure plan to!

Pet Protector

Ah the warmer weather is on the way. Visions of long walks, hiking in the woods and swimming with our dogs are dancing around in our heads. But we dog people also know what comes with the heat; fleas and ticks.

Ever wish there was another way to protect your pet other than the standard dose of monthly chemicals? Well look no further.

Pet Protector is a one-of-a-kind disc made of high quality steel alloys that attaches to your dog’s collar. It’s charged with a combination of Magnetic and Scalar waves that produce an invisible shield around your dog when triggered by their movement. The waves are harmless to people and animals but drive fleas, ticks and mosquitoes away.  How cool is that?

If you’d like to know more about this amazing product and how it works be sure to watch the videos provided on their website. Or consider becoming affiliated with the company.

Guest Article - The Surprising Benefits Of Adding Fiber To Your Dog's Diet

You might be surprised to discover that adding fiber to your dog's diet can actually be a very good thing, even though you're well aware of the fact that it's important for you to have sufficient fiber in your diet. There are a number of important, nutritional benefits that your dog can gain from dietary fiber, which is something that is only now being acknowledged given that fiber has long be thought of as being mere filler.

It is, however, vital to speak with your vet about the amount of fiber that your dog should be getting. Too much fiber can actually have an adverse effect on your pet's digestive tract, much like it can with people. If you make the decision to increase your dog's fiber intake, you'll need to carefully monitor the amount of fiber that your pet's getting to ensure that too much of this carbohydrate is never being consumed.

Adding a bit of fiber to your pet's diet will help him shed extra pounds, which can definitely be good if your dog happens to be obese and desperately needs to lose weight. Your pet can have a far higher quality of life and he or she can live longer as well if the right body weight is maintained, and so, adding suitable amounts of fiber to your pet's diet can really help to this end. Additional fiber will not dramatically increase the number of calories that your pet is consuming, but it can promote weight loss by making your animal feel full and less likely to overeat.

Adding fiber to your dog's diet will create a diet that's both satisfying and healthy. In addition to helping your pet reach his or her ideal weight, fiber can also assist with ongoing weight maintenance.

Fiber is even good for preventing constipation in your pet, which is something that animals can experience just like humans. Constipation is more likely to be a problem with older animals which is why you should increase your pet's fiber intake as he or she grows older. Many dog food brands that are designed specifically for senior dogs actually have a higher fiber content as the result of this fact.

Given that fiber absorbs water, it has the capacity to expedite movement in the intestines by creating additional bulk in this area. As such, as time passes, your dog will enjoy more comfortable and far easier bowel movements overall.

After fiber has been added to your dog's diet, your pet will enjoy regular bowel movements and more consistent stools. There is, however, always the potential to see loose and messy stools if you give your dog more fiber than necessary.

Blood sugar levels can be balanced by additional fiber as well by lowering the rate at which the body absorbs sugar from the intestines which mean that a modest amount of fiber can actually help in the management of diabetes.

Always be sure to buy top-quality food for your pet as your dog can suffer unnecessarily if he or she gets too much fiber. Soybean hulls, beet pulp, tomato, apple, peanut hulls, and pomace are some of the sources of fiber to check for when purchasing dog food. Rice, oats and many other grains are also indigestible fiber sources.

Increasing the amount of fiber that your dog gets can provide a number of benefits, but you still have to make sure that your animal isn't getting too much. When you aren't sure about how much fiber your dog should be getting, be sure to talk with your vet. Want to enrich your knowledge about dog care, consider stopping by Build Great Farms.

Guest Article - How to Find the Best American Pit Bull Terrier Breeder for you?

All of you have had had those moments in your lives when you have dreamed and thought about somehow getting a cute puppy as a family pet. If treated right, dogs are known as human's best friend - they are very kind and loyal to their owners and could serve as great child and housekeepers. If that moment in your life is now and you have set your eyes on the American Pit Bull Terrier dog breed I'll be like Superman for you because in this article I'm going to present you the ultimate guide to finding the right American Pit Bull Terrier Breeder for you.

First of all, I have to say that if you're looking for a cute puppy only because it's cute you should definitely change your mind considering the choice of this pit bull breed. They are really great and loving animals despite society's opinion on them but every creature on Earth grows up in course of time and some of them don't look that cute anymore! Just saying, everyone should be treated right no matter how they look like, ain't that right?

As an owner of a representative of this breed, I am going to show you the right way about how to find a reputable breeder and exactly how I did it a couple of years ago.

How to spot the right APBT breeder for you?
  1. A reputable breeder breeds only one dog breed, if you know what I mean. Beware of people who are in the businesses with more than 1, maximum 2 breeds. They are probably owners of a puppy mill where dogs are being produced like potatoes in really large amounts and have been kept in horrible conditions. You should not buy from such places or in any way support their existence!
  2. As a reputable breeder, there will be probably a lot of people interested in his puppies. That's why, you'd most likely have to join a waiting list.
  3. They are probably part of a Pit Bull dog club - most of the respected breeders are usually somehow involved in some sorts of dog club. In most cases, they are also breeding show-dogs.
  4. The reputable will ask you A LOT of questions. They always want know in what conditions is the puppy going to raise, what person are you, is the puppy's needs going to be satisfied etc. They will be emotionally and physically involved during the whole process even after selling the puppy to you.

Those 4 points would most possibly lead you to finding the right American Pit Bull Terrier Breeder for you (at least that's what my friends did) but that's not what I actually did. In fact, I didn't even get my doggy from a breeder. You have probably heard of those non-profit Rescue Centers which support adopting young and adult dogs what is a great human action by itself. I did get my puppy from one of them and have to say I love my dog more than anything! It's an awesome creature!

The top American Pit Bull Terrier Rescue organizations you should check out are:
  • Pit Bull Rescue Central
  • AdoptaPet.com
  • Out of the Pits

In the end, it's really not about how much you're searching for something. It's about where you're searching for it. Getting the American Pit Bull Terrier you have always dreamed of is a matter of 3-4 days, maybe a week or two. But it's totally worth it making a pit bull smile. In fact, pit bulls are among the few dog breeds that are able to smile. They really do!
